A live-coded duel

The Spell Duel

Two teams of mages, the Sun and the Moon, trade spells round after round: fire, frost and storm to strike, wards to turn them back, heals and drains to last. You write your mage's mind in Python or JavaScript, one function called every round, and you keep rewriting it while the duel runs. Every fifteen seconds your newest spell takes over.

How a match is played

  1. Rounds. Every round, each mage still standing casts one spell, chosen by its player's cast(view). All the spells of a round land together, so a ward is a guess at what is coming. Four rounds are played every fifteen seconds.
  2. Health and mana. A mage has 150 health and up to 100 mana, and wins back 10 mana a round (5 while chilled). A spell it cannot pay for fizzles.
  3. The spells. fire 20 mana: 18 harm to one foe frost 15: 12 harm, and the foe is chilled for two rounds storm 25: 10 harm to every foe ward 10: stops one element this round and sends half back heal 20: mends 15 health, yours or an ally's drain 10: 6 harm past any ward, and 6 mana back focus free: 25 mana, but a quarter more harm taken this round
  4. Bouts. A side that fells every foe takes the bout. The rest of that tick is a pause, and the next opens a new bout with every mage whole.
  5. Win. When time runs out, the side that took more bouts wins. Level on bouts, the bout under way decides it by the health left on each side.

Rewrite your spell whenever you like and press Cast it: your newest spell plays from the next tick. Before you play, or between bouts, spar with one of Xher's bots.
